Eligibility to Join USAF MARS

The applicant must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Be a United States citizen or resident alien.
  • Possess a valid amateur radio license issued by the Federal Communications Commission of Technician class or higher.
  • Operational digital capability using either TNC or soundcard. Currently USAF MARS uses PACTOR I and the several computer sound card modes, Olivia and MT 63, and M110A are most common.
  • Possess an operational HF station capable of operating SSB on at least two of the USAF MARS HF frequencies assigned to the North Central Area.
  • All new members must have equipment that meets a frequency stability of +/- 20 Hz prior to joining AF MARS. Current FCC type accepted amateur equipment and NITA compliant equipment meet these specifications. All VHF radio equipment must have a channel spacing of 12.5 kHz (or less).
  • Not join or belong to more than one MARS service at the same time.

MARS members must agree to operate in accordance with the rules and regulations governing MARS as follow:

  • A minimum of 12 hours participation per calendar quarter.
  • Participate in a training program designed to acquaint the member with military communication procedure.

GENERAL RELEASE - In consideration of the permission extended to me by the United States through its officers and agents to engage in activities of the Military Auxiliary Radio System, I do hereby, for myself, my heirs, executors and the administrators, remise, release and forever discharge the government of the United States, its officers, agents and employees, acting officially or otherwise, from any and all claims, demands, actions or cause of action, on account of damage to property and personal injuries, or death, suffered by me directly or indirectly resulting from my participation in the activities of the Military Auxiliary Radio System. I certify that I will abide by all the governing rules and regulations now or hereafter prescribed by the Department of Defense for the Military Auxiliary Radio System. (This release is not intended to apply and shall not be construed to apply to statutory rights of personnel in the military service, nor to any other rights of individuals under policies of life insurance (E.G. NSLI) or other forms of contracts with the United States. 

My typed signature below indicates that I have read and understand the above statements and that I agree to abide by the regulations established by the United States Air Force and Department of Defense as given in the current MARS MOI. I further agree to download, maintain a copy of said MOI. My typed signature shall have the same force and effect as though I had physically signed this application in pen and ink, by hand.
